I could hardly believe what I saw yesterday and I bet you’ll be blown away as well!
In terms of obvious signs and Shamanic omens, this one was flashing neon.
Here we go:
I was working on my computer for a few hours yesterday afternoon. My desk sits right in the window so I have a great view.
Around 4:30pm, I saw a massive bird fly by and land on the ground about 20 feet away. It was a Great Horned Owl!
It saw me move to look at it, so it stared at me through the window. We watched each other for a few moments, then it bent down to start eating something.
In the trees behind the owl, I saw a flash of bright yellow, and realized it was a male Western Tanager! These gorgeous birds are sunshine-yellow with neon red heads. I had seen one once a few weeks ago that flew by exactly at an auspicious moment to answer a question. This bird was flitting around in the trees, alarm calling at the owl.
The owl picked up its head and I saw it was eating a black snake. It was on the ground for about five minutes, alternating between eating the snake and pausing to look directly at me through the window. The tanager was in the background the whole time.
When it had finished eating, the owl flew up to sit on a low branch nearby. It eventually shuffled up the branch and out of view, so I went back to working (after sending excited voice notes and photos to a few witchy friends).
This is the part that made it even more incredible:
Then, around 6pm, the same Great Horned Owl flew down to the same area AGAIN and ate ANOTHER snake! (There was no tanager this time.)
I could hardly believe it. This felt like a once-in-a-blue-moon sighting that I saw TWICE within 90 minutes. (And of course I promptly sent all-caps follow up texts to witchy friends.)
The owl flew off out of view, but I could hear birds alarm calling out in the backyard so I knew it was still nearby. Athena and I went out shortly afterwards to look around, and we saw it fly off into the forest as we approached.
And while this is an incredible nature sighting/bird story —
For those of us who speak the language of Spirit, are attuned to the mysteries, receive Shamanic visions and magical transmissions, it’s so much more than that.
Visitations like this are always layered with meaning, inviting us to quiet our analytical minds, suspend disbelief and open ourselves to the infinite intelligence of the Universe.
Receiving communications from the natural world and the spirit realm has always been part of the Shamanic “job description,” as is interpreting them through meditation and reflection.
My Shamanic “great grandfather”, Joska, (my teacher’s teacher’s teacher) told stories of his training as a young boy, when people in the village would go to the Shaman (his teacher, Tamas) seeking help with questions. Tamas would pose the question to a large, very old birch tree, listen to the wind rustling through the leaves, and receive an answer. According to Joska, the answer always turned out to be true.
Listening to rustling leaves is a very old method of Shamanic communication. Some people receive messages from the wind or shapes in the fire. I receive many communications through animals, particularly birds. (And right at this moment, a Raven started calling outside, haha.)
These communications are available to anyone who learns how to receive them and can enter a trance state to open the channel of communication. (Even in the case of sudden, unexpected messengers like I received twice yesterday. I was immediately able to drop into a trance state and connect with the transmission.)
