Wowza, Owl is coming through strongly! You know that feeling when Spirit is practically slapping you in the face with a repeat message? Yeah, I thought so.

If you’ve been following my work for a while, you’ve already heard me tell the stories of an owl attacking me and offering me a deep medicine initiation. Owl began getting my attention one evening last week, when I heard 2 (or possibly 3) Great Horned Owls calling back and forth for 15 minutes straight. They were somewhere close by in the forest in front of my house near Portland, OR. At the time, I just enjoyed it and didn’t tune in more deeply.

Two days later, I was driving home after offering an Alchemy teaching/wisdom transmission, and suddenly a massive owl flew right over my car on the dark highway. I swerved slightly and recovered, but then forgot about it (until this morning).

Yesterday morning, Athena and I were hiking in the forest near our home and we walked right under a Great Horned Owl sitting on a low branch. I only saw it because I turned around to look at Athena right as it took off, and landed slightly ahead of us on a higher branch. I paused by its tree and offered gratitude and appreciation. As I turned away to keep walking, it flew off.

This morning on my way home from the park with Athena, a Barred Owl flew right in front of my car (that’s when I remembered the owl that flew over my car a few nights ago).

Message received. It was time to journey with Owl and see why Spirit was trying to get my attention.

So this morning I journeyed with Owl. And as Owl medicine does, it brought my attention to some things that are uncomfortable for me to see, but that hold the opportunity for profound healing. Owl offered guidance related to one of my current growth edges and helped me see where I have been resistant. And as Owl medicine always reminds me, “It is safe to see in the darkness.”

I received some powerful messages and healing transmissions that I’ll be reflecting on and integrating. Thank you, Owl!

Shamanic Ritual to Heal the Land

A sea of cut branches intermingles with mud churned up by colossal machines, the tracks of their tread gouging the earth in wide, deep scars.

The crowns of trees and poles deemed “too thin to be useful” spray in chaotic disorder as evidence of the careless destruction.

It is carnage.

But the part that truly makes my stomach turn are the three piles of logs left uncollected. Over 100 trees that were killed with the intent to harvest for lumber, but their bodies were simply left in a pile.

They killed more than they needed. And they left the rest to rot.

This is the scene currently in the forest near my home, after the loggers came through and “thinned” the woods in January and February. But this same disregard for Earth and right relationship with resources is playing out everywhere.

This is what happens when we live in a society with a deeply ingrained culture of scarcity consciousness, mindless consumption and instant gratification.

When we are removed from the cyclical flow of life, we forget where our resources come from.

When we engage with money as credit cards and digital bank accounts, we have no embodied relationship with true wealth.

When we can go to Home Depot and buy lumber for a home project, we forget the forest it came from.

We never walked through the woods and witnessed all the birds, deer and abundant life before the logging. We never watched the canopy shake and heard the ground shudder as a massive tree was felled. We never saw the piles of logs left over because someone cut first and calculated later.

Unnecessary destruction and loss of life.

Our relationship with abundance, fertility and embodied wealth goes beyond our personal healing: it is imperative for our collective healing and evolution of human consciousness.

The way our society (in general) lives without regard for Earth and right relationship with non-human life is completely unsustainable.

And it is deeply wounding all those who perpetuate that system, even if they don’t realize it.

Your Spiritual Growth and Education in 2024

Happy Gregorian new year, friends and like-hearted seekers!

If you're taking the opportunity to vision, set goals and orient yourself for the year ahead, good for you! (If not, that's fine, too.)

If you're like me, you probably have a few courses or retreats on your radar that you would love to do, but need to plan, schedule and budget for.

Now is a great time to set goals and intentions for spiritual growth and skill development in conjunction with year planning.
 

Here are some helpful things to consider. Ask yourself:

1. What are my priorities for my spiritual path this year? (For example: skill development and certification in a particular modality, personalized 1:1 mentorship with a teacher, sample from a buffet of different modalities, get your personal practice really dialed in, etc.)

2. What training, education, support and/or mentorship would be most supportive for me to address those priorities? (For example: go on that retreat, work with that teacher you've been following for years, take lots of mini courses, etc.)

3. What prerequisites and preparation do I need to pursue those priorities? (For example: are there certain courses that require prerequisites? Is there advance preparation required for a retreat?)

4. What commitment of time and energy am I willing to allocate to my spiritual priorities this year? (This can be flexible as necessary, but it's helpful to realistically assess your availability and be honest with yourself about your capacity. For example: take a year-long course and devote up to 5 hours per week to study and practice, take a 7-week course in the fall when kids go back to school, go on a 10-day retreat once a year, 10 minutes of daily personal practice, etc.)

5. What is my budget for my spiritual priorities this year? (This can be flexible as necessary, but I have found it to be helpful especially when planning for higher-investment training, retreats, mentorship and tuition. I have a continuing education budget in my business and consistently spend 5-10% of my gross income on courses, skill development and healing work for my own spiritual practice and so that I can grow as a practitioner and serve my clients more effectively. For example: you want to take a course that costs $15k but offers monthly payments that work for your budget, you can comfortably spend $200 per month attending local events and circles, you set aside $50 per month in your budget to take that $400 course, etc.)

6. What deadlines, prices and scheduling/3D logistical information do I need to track this year? (For example: the course you want to take begins in September and costs $X, so you need to look for early bird registration starting in July and allocate $Y in your monthly budget so you're ready to pay in full, and block the October retreat dates off in your calendar and request time off from work for that long weekend.)

I regularly consider and review these questions when deciding how to plan and where to invest in my spiritual path and skill development. I hope this helps you!

• Prerequisites and preparation: For people of intermediate to advanced spiritual background. Recommended that candidates have foundations of energy healing and personal practice.

Are you sabotaging your energy work?

If you don’t have an active, working relationship with local land and nature spirits, you might be sabotaging your healing and ceremonial work.

Imagine for a moment that you are setting up a healing studio or ceremonial circle in an existing temple space. This temple already has its own altars, temple keepers and guardians who protect and regulate the energy of the space. There are plenty of people who already live and work and pray at the temple. The temple was humming along just fine, doing its own thing before you got there.

When you arrived at the temple, you didn’t ask anyone’s permission if you could be there and do your work. You didn’t introduce yourself to anyone, or take the time to get to know the existing temple structure. You simply waltzed in and set up your healing studio right in the middle of the temple. You built your own altars on top of the ones that were already there. You never considered whether you, your clients and your type of energy work were welcome and compatible with the existing structure of the temple. You wanted to move into that space to do your work, so you did.

The temple is a sacred space and the guardians there are generally kind, so they may or may not ask you to leave directly. But they’re probably not going to go out of their way to help you or accommodate you, especially if you never bothered to introduce yourself, learn their names, or ask them if you could set up your healing work. The temple and temple keepers are going to keep doing what they were already doing, regardless of how it may disrupt your healing work. They are going to maintain their altars and the currents of energy already in the temple, even if it disturbs the ceremony current. Best case scenario, they will ignore you. Worst case scenario, they will interfere with your healing work to make you leave.

Now imagine that this temple space is the land herself, and the guardians and temple keepers are the nature spirits that already exist on the land. The altars are the sacred spaces on the land where energy converges and regulates the ecosystem. The currents of prayer in the temple are the ley lines and Earth grid of aliveness on Gaia.

You would never move into a human-built temple space without asking permission. You would never assume you were invited. In order to do delicate and powerful work for healing and ceremony, you would have a conversation to make sure your work is welcome and aligned. To move in with entitlement would be rude and the temple keepers would be totally justified in kicking you out.

Active, working relationships with land and nature spirits are not just nice to have for healing and ceremonial work. They are functionally purposeful, and necessary.

Here’s what becomes possible when you have active, working relationships with local land and nature spirits:

• Instead of imposing your presence and work on the land without asking permission, you will be a welcome collaborator with a powerful, existing temple. Your healing and ceremonial work will be allowed to utilize the temple resources and harmonize with existing currents of energy.

• Instead of being sustained and generated by you and your spirit council, your healing and ceremonial work will be grounded and anchored into the energy grid of Gaia. Your work will be more powerful, sustainable and resourced.

• Instead of being an uninvited guest, you will form close relationships with the guardians and temple keepers (local nature spirits) and may call upon them to support you in your healing and ceremonial work. The more you nurture these allyships, the more they will collaborate with you.

• Instead of having to work really hard to ground your energy and make sure there are no interferences, you will be clear and supported by the local nature spirits and they won’t interfere with you and your clients. Moreover, they will intercede against unwelcome influences on your behalf for the purpose of protection and regulation in ceremony.
